Nestle and its subsidiaries always strive to be on top of the market by pushing the boundaries of their products and services. Their coffeemaker line, known as Nespresso, is no exception to such competitiveness so coffee lovers look out for the latest products and services offered by the Swiss international corporation.
One of its latest innovations is the Nespresso Pixie. And as its name implies, this is a small pod espresso machine that strives to deliver big results. Magical, if we are to believe the hype of Nespresso in its product descriptions and advertisements – just like the magical pixies.
Despite its small size, the Pixie is filled with thefollowing features:
Features and Specifications
The Nespresso Pixie has a small footprint, along with a brew time of 30 seconds. It’s perfect for apartment dwellers, college students living in dorms and other individuals who brew single-serve coffee most of the time.
The Pixie has no milk frother. If you want to make lattes, we suggest buying an Aeroccino Milk Frother for the purpose, or buy the Plus Aeroccino package.

Espresso Performance
The Nespresso Pixie is easy to operate, too, which is heaven-sent in a rush-and-hurry lifestyle. When using the espresso maker right out of the box, these are the steps:
- Fill the water reservoir and then place in its slot at the coffeemaker’s back.
- Plug it in and turn it on.
- You need to prime the Nespresso Pixie the first time it is used. In subsequent uses, you can skip on this step. Simply Prime the machine by lifting the lever and pressing the coffee button, the water should flow from the spout.
- Insert the desired capsule flavour into the slot and push the lever.
- Push the appropriate brew button for either the espresso or lungo setting.
The Capsules
As can be expected, the Nespresso Pixie uses the coffee capsules that can be bought from the official website of its manufacturer.
Customers attest that the flavors, aromas and textures of capsule coffee from Nespresso rivals the best gourmet coffee in the world although we must say that it is also a matter of taste – as is true with all coffee.
You may like lungo but I like espresso better or you may love Ristretto while I go for Roma – that sort of personal preference issue.
As of now, there are 12 espresso (9) and lungo (3) varieties to choose from. When your stock of capsules begins to run low, we suggest ordering as soon as possible.
The wait times for delivery can be relatively lengthy and you must have your caffeine fix every day. And no, most local retailers do not carry the coffee capsules for the Pixie – or for the entire range of Nespresso coffeemakers, for that matter, which is a bummer.
We did see one flaw in the Pixie. If the coffee is dispensed directly into a porcelain cup or a double-walled glass, the first sips are okay but the heat quickly dissipates. It appears that the coffee is best served in a preheated cup or a foam cup to preserve its heat.
If you want to preheat the cup, it.s easy, too. Set the machine to its lungo setting, preheat the cup and then add the coffee capsule to the machine. Speed is sacrificed but at least you have hot coffee making its soothing way down your throat.
Also, the coffee capsules are pricey although you can still save money by lesser visits to the neighbourhood coffee shop. We think that the price of the Nespresso Pixie and the coffee capsule pays for itself in the long run.
Clean Up
Cleaning the Nespresso Pixie is a breeze, thanks to its small footprint. Daily cleaning is required for the brew gasket but the water tank and drip tray only need cleaning every few days.
Descaling is recommended every 2-3 months depending on your usage.
Consumer Reviews
Most consumers agree that the Pixie provides for tasty coffee in many varieties of espresso and lungo, all for an affordable price. Since it is constructed with aluminium, it is considered as recyclable, which other coffeemakers made from plastic are often not.
Plus, its auto shut-off means that it uses less electricity, thus, making it one of the most eco-friendly coffeemakers from Nespresso. Its compact dimensions also add to its appeal.
Conclusion
If you are into brewing single-serve coffee on your own, or you have limited space but you still want a good coffeemaker, then the Nespresso Pixie is a good choice. It’s also an affordable gift for special occasions and holidays.
