Your first question may be ‘what even is a grind and brew coffee maker?’ You’re not alone. Some people aren’t even aware these exist!
A grind and brew coffee maker is essentially that, a coffee machine that will not only brew coffee but grind it as well.
I’ve been a barista for over a decade now, and in that time I’ve learned how important it is to use whole beans.
Once a bean has been roasted and ground, it immediately begins to lose its flavor. While it doesn’t matter if you keep it ground for a week or so, after that the difference in quality is massive.
This is why I always tell people to buy whole beans! But grinding your own beans can be more time consuming and annoying than you think. This is where the grind-and-brew coffee maker swoops in to make our morning cup of coffee quick, easy and stress free.
So I did my research, looking for the best of the best, and I think I found them. The came out on top, but let’s take a look at what I’ve found.

1. Gevi 10-Cup Drip Coffee Maker
Best Overall Option
The Gevi is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars on Amazon. It has a 1.5L large water tank, a removable filter basket, a programmable timer mode, and a “keep warm plate.”
This grind and brew coffee maker allows you to make a cup of coffee with coffee beans or ground coffee. If you’re a discriminating coffee connoisseur, you’ll like this machine because it has an eight setting Coffee Grinding Control that lets you choose your grind level from coarse to fine.
The programmable timer lets you preset the machine start time and start brewing coffee at the specified time. There is a bell after brewing, so you’ll know exactly when your coffee is ready. It’s a pretty intuitive, smart machine. Along with a beautiful LED screen comes intuitive controls such as the “CUP 2-10” button, which will control the amount of coffee grounds.
Many people love the straight-down structure. The coffee grounds fall directly into the filter, so you do not need to worry about them remaining in the coffee machine–making the next brew taste stale.
Consumers get a “Two-Year Promise” for reliability and satisfaction.
2. BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Mill and Brew
Best Budget Option (with burr grinder)
BLACK+DECKER is an established brand that has produced high-quality appliances and tools since 1910.
With the BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Mill and Brew Coffeemaker, you can brew your favorite cup of coffee with whole beans or ground. You can also customize it to your taste with the brew strength selector. Options include regular, bold, or strong.
The QuickTouch programming allows you to easily program it to brew at whatever time you want so you can wake up in the morning to a fresh pot of coffee. For those who can’t wait, the Sneak-A-Cup feature lets you sneak a cup before the brewing cycle ends.
While making coffee can get a little messy, you need not worry because the grinder and filter are easy to remove and clean. The dishwasher safe Duralife carafe holds up to 12 cups, and each cup is approximately five ounces. Of course, it varies by brewing technique.
You may enjoy this grind and brew coffee maker because it is relatively quiet, very affordable, and makes a delicious, custom cup of coffee. You get a lot for dishing out very little.

3. Cuisinart DGB-400 Automatic Grind & Brew 12-Cup Coffeemaker
Best Budget Option (with blade grinder)
So I have two different ‘best budget options’, and you’ll notice this one is a little cheaper than the other why. Why? Because it doesn’t have a burr grinder, but rather a simple blade grinder. While you won’t get as good of a grind with this one, you will still get a tasty cup of coffee. Burr grinders are important for a fine, espresso grind. For this machine, you don’t have to worry about that.
But what does this machine have to offer? With 24 hour programmability, easy to use controls, 12 cup carafe and, most importantly, no need to grind your own beans, the cuisinart is an excellent choice. This is especially so because of how inexpensive this machine is!
These features are nice, but does it give a good cup of coffee? By all accounts, its a resounding yes. Included in this machine is a charcoal filter, for a pure, coffee flavour. And once your coffee has brewed, keep it warm for up to 4 hours with its built in hot plate.
This machine offers a lot for its incredibly low price. Definitely worth considering if you’re on a budget and aren’t bothered by the blade grinder.

4. Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew Thermal 12-Cup
Best Mid-Range, Long Lasting Option
Cuisinart is another established brand that has been consistently producing quality appliances for decades. The Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew Thermal 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker is no exception.
It is fully programmable, has an auto-shutoff, a brew-pause feature (enjoy a cup before brewing finishes), a grind-off function, and can hold up to 12 cups of coffee.
It has a built-in automatic burr grinder and can hold half of a pound of coffee beans. The grind control and strength selector allow you to adjust every aspect of your coffee. You can choose between strong, medium, or mild coffee strength.
To ensure freshness and keep the coffee hot, the 12 cup thermal carafe is double-walled and seals everything in. For those who are health conscious, the charcoal water filter removes impurities, and the machine is BPA-free.
You may enjoy this grind and brew coffee maker because it is small, dependable, durable, and does the job. You may not enjoy it because it is pretty loud for the 30 seconds it is grinding the beans.

5. Chefman Grind and Brew 4 Cup Coffee Maker
Best Discrete, Easy To Use Option
This quiet, cute, contemporary little machine is perfect for small kitchens where there isn’t much counter space. There are not many buttons on this machine, so it is pretty simple to use. If you’re new to grinding and brewing your own coffee, you may like it a lot because of this.
Enjoy your coffee as strong as you’d like with the compact four-cup home brewing system and multiple brew strength settings. You also have the choice of using pre-ground coffee if you don’t have beans on hand, keeping your coffee hot with the 30-minute Keep Warm function, and pausing mid-brew to steal a cup.
The coffee made with this machine is remarkably fresh. The Chefman Grind and Brew’s integrated grinder allows you to grind your beans right before brewing them to preserve the beans’ flavors.

Honorable Mentions
Breville Grind Control Coffee Maker
The breville grind control boasts many of the features and functionality of the previously mentioned coffee machines. However, there is one little difference that makes this stand out.
While this machine does come with a 12 cup, double lined, insulated thermal carafe to keep your coffee warm for hours, you don’t actually have to use it. If you’re at home, you can switch the machine to a single serving option, which will fill up just one mug of delicious coffee. If you’re on the go, switch it to the ‘to go’ cup setting, and it’ll fill up a full to go thermal coffee cup. Amazing stuff!

Capresso 465 CoffeeTeam TS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker
The Capresso CoffeeTeam 10 Cup Coffeemaker produces fresh, delicious coffee at any time of the day. With full programmability, built in burr grinder and 10 cup, insulated carafe, fresh coffee has never been easier to get at home.
While I would like to say I love this machine, it is rather simple. It doesn’t really offer anything extra or interesting. I’ve also found that the controls can be a bit complicated to use, especially if you’re not very tech savvy.
Nevertheless, you should get some good use out of it. It also doesn’t need cleaning as often as some of the other machines in this list. Instead of daily cleaning, you can expect to clean this machine about once a week.

Buying Guide
Many people choose a grind and brew coffee maker because it’s efficient and makes a fresh, delicious cup of coffee every time. Before you jump into buying one, let’s look at some things you should consider, such as size, programmable features, and customizability.
Things To Consider
You should consider the following information and features to make an informed buying decision.
Size
There is not a one-size-fits-all grind and brew coffee maker. It’s about what suits your needs. However, the general rule of thumb is the bigger and heavier the machine, the more features it offers and the better it is.
Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of small machines that do a great job and look super cute doing it, but premium machines will always be hefty and perform better. That’s just the nature of the beast.
Type of Machine
What kind of coffee do you want to make? Espresso? Americano? Cappuccino? All of the above? This will determine the machine you will need to use. The types of machines include drip coffee makers or espresso machines.
A drip coffee maker is what most people think of when they picture a coffee maker. It is a straightforward machine that sprinkles water through ground coffee in a filter. It is relatively low-priced, easy to maintain, and allows you to make large batches.
Espresso machines–on the other hand–let you make small cups of high-quality coffee at home and are pretty expensive. They work by forcing water at high pressure through finely ground beans. Sometimes these machines come with milk frothers so you can make lattes and cappuccinos.
Type of Grinder
There are two main types of grinders: burr grinders and blade grinders. You will want to look out for a burr grinder as they produce a more consistent grain size and grind the bean a lot finer.
Programmable Features and Customizability
Some coffee machines let you choose the strength of your coffee, how fine the beans are ground, and set a timer so you can wake up with a fresh pot ready. These are all great features to look out for.
Durability
Machines made with stainless steel are the strongest and considered the most durable, but they cost more, of course. ABS plastic is also a good material. Keep in mind; you’ll have a hard time finding one that is totally plastic-free.
Consider the warranty when making a decision. It will tip you off to how much confidence the manufacturer has in the machine.
Modestly priced machines should last five years, and more high-end appliances should last 15-20 years (if you care for it properly).
Ease of Cleaning
Many grind and brew coffee makers are a pain in the neck to clean–especially when they get clogged. Look for a machine that’s easy to open and take apart so you can clean everything thoroughly.
The more you clean and care for your machine, the longer it will last.
Getting The Most Out of Your Machine
You should experience the best cup of coffee with these tips:
- Use high-quality, fresh beans. For example, the beans from Starbucks are popular.
- Grind beans right before brewing, so all the flavor stays intact.
- Use filtered water instead of tap water, so nothing tampers with the desired outcome.
- Don’t forget to adjust the grain size to the correct type of bean and brew time.
- Monitor your coffee to water ratio by carefully weighing them.
Final Thoughts
I must say, I really was blown away by the Gevi 10-Cup Coffee Maker. It does everything you want it to, and more. It’s the perfect balance between functionality, easy of use and beautiful design all in one little package.
But maybe one of the others is more your cup of tea (or coffee, in this case!). Nevertheless, one of these machine would sit proudly in any kitchen or home office.
